With roots in the eponymous, impoverished Missouri town, filmmakers and cousins Andrew Droz Palermo and Tracy Droz Tragos bring a sensitive touch to this richly observed and sublimely shot portrait of teens Andrew, Harley and Appachey—genuine, multifaceted subjects not typically represented on screen except as stereotypes. Immersing the audience in their environment and in their lives, the film inspires hope that they’ll find a way not only to survive their circumstances, but to thrive despite them.
