THE VOLCANO: RESCUE FROM WHAKAARI

NYC PREMIERE It’s easy to see why White Island (Whakaari) off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island has been a magnet for thrill-seeking international tourists: few places on Earth allow for such an up-close look at the otherworldly wonders of an active volcano basin. On a beautiful December afternoon in 2019, however, disaster struck when the volcano erupted with no warning, threatening everyone in its path. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy constructs a riveting retelling of the tragedy through the voices, and cellphone footage, of the survivors and the courageous rescuers who saved so many lives. – Jaie Laplante
