New York University’s NewsDoc program prepares students to report and produce for traditional and non- traditional media. The program emphasizes not only the story, but the storytelling. The goal is to have a student skilled in both form and content, able to tell a story by effectively using all aspects of the medium.
NYU’s showcase includes: In All Fairness (USA, 21 min., Richa Sanwal) finds the filmmaker in a tug of war with her Grandma, who has a preference for light skin color. School of Yoga (USA, 30 mins., Contessa Gayles) explores an alternate curriculum for vulnerable city students. Fairy Tales (USA, 30 min., Rongfei Guo) profiles Fairy Wang, a working-class girl from rural China, who thinks she’s the next Coco Chanel, and becomes an overnight sensation via Weibo, China’s largest social media site.
