EXPLORE AMERICA WITH DOC NYC

October 19, 2015

amerpersp-fearof13-1200For a taste of American documentary filmmaking today, be sure to check out our American Perspectives Selection. This program offers diverse viewpoints from all parts of the country.

In the North American Premiere of The Fear of 13, Director David Sington (scheduled to attend) draws a portrait of convicted prisoner Nick Yarris, who was sentenced to death for a brutal crime in 1982. Compellingly presented as his confessional, The Fear of 13 melds psychological thriller and true crime drama to reveal the shocking truth behind not only Yarris’ case, but the American justice system as a whole.

Another American Perspective film, An Autobiography of Michelle Maren, tells the story of a woman who fled an abusive home to end up in the streets of New York, taking a variety of roles, including magician’s assistant, beauty queen and porn star. Now middle-aged and living on disability, she struggles with a host of psychological disorders. Inspired by Michel Negroponte’s acclaimed Jupiter’s Wife, Michelle reaches out to the director, convinced telling her story will change her life. Both Michel Negroponte and Michelle Meran will be in attendance to answer your questions at the end of the screenings.
