Spring Showcase 2023

DOC NYC’s third annual Spring Showcase returns from May 18th – June 16th, 2023. Viewers have free access to 15 of this year’s most talked-about nonfiction films and series, paired with exclusive conversations featuring the creative teams behind them.

Week 1

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, tension roils between pro and anti-police factions in Minneapolis. In predominantly black North Minneapolis crime rates have risen to their highest in decades. At North High School, football is a bright spot. The coaches work endlessly to earn a championship, create college opportunities, and most of all, keep their kids safe. The biggest challenge facing the North High coaches: they’re all police officers.


A short kid from a Canadian army base becomes the international pop culture darling of the 1980s—only to find the course of his life altered by a stunning diagnosis. What happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease?


Week 2

A sweeping portrait of conservationists Kris and Doug Tompkins chronicling their fight to preserve one of the last truly wild places on earth.


NYC PREMIERE It’s easy to see why White Island (Whakaari) off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island has been a magnet for thrill-seeking international tourists: few places on Earth allow for such an up-close look at the otherworldly wonders of an active volcano basin. On a beautiful December afternoon in 2019, however, disaster struck when the volcano erupted with no warning, threatening everyone in its path. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy constructs a riveting retelling of the tragedy through the voices, and cellphone footage, of the survivors and the courageous rescuers who saved so many lives. – Jaie Laplante

American Reckoning investigates the unsolved 1967 murder of a NAACP leader in Mississippi, and reveals a little-known history of Black armed resistance during the civil rights movement.


Week 3

WORLD PREMIERE This coming-of-age story focuses on Kyle Westphal, an isolated autistic boy who’s fascinated by fabric and emerges from an experimental autism treatment program to become a fashion designer. Westphal’s family looks back on twenty years of his development with candor and humor. The film combines observational footage, archival material, and animation to chronicle how a passion for fashion transformed Kyle and his family. – Thom Powers

The November 15th screening will be followed by a Q&A with Directors Dan Crane, Katie Taber and film subjects Kyle Westphal and Jennifer Westphal and moderated by Emilia Petrarca of The Cut. An intimate and humanizing portrait of one of the world’s most famous blonde bombshell, Pamela Anderson as she shares the story of her rise to fame, rocky romances and infamous sex tape scandal.


Week 5

A look at actor, model and icon Brooke Shields as she transforms from a sexualized young girl to a woman discovering her power.


If These Walls Could Sing, from Disney Original Documentary, gives exclusive access to the most famous and longest-running studio in the world, Abbey Road Studios.


On an ordinary street, we find Eli Timoner in his final days and discover an extraordinary life filled with wild achievements, tragic loss and enduring love. His daughter Ondi shares an account of a family courageously, and joyously, preparing for his departure.
